OVERSEER is an assignment and function by appointment. It is not an office by ordination. An overseer may be assigned to serve a congregation by decision of the congregation with approval of the Executive Board of CMC. The assignment is of specified term not exceeding five years, but with the possibility of successive terms. An overseer can be selected from among the experienced ordained ministers and bishops who are ministerial members of Conservative Mennonite Conference. The provision of the overseer assignment was officially authorized by CMC in August 1986.
The overseer serves the assigned congregation in a ministry of giving vision to congregational life and ministry, advising the pastor or pastors and the con-gregation, being a pastor to the pastor or pastors, and developing wholesome relationships within the con-gregation and with Conservative Mennonite Conference. The function of the overseer is equivalent to the function of the bishop, as needed, in the congregation he serves as overseer. The term overseer is not used in the case of a pastor in regard to the church he serves as pastor. The overseer job description is included in CMC Ministerial Manual.
BISHOP is included in the CMC Constitution (1) as an office (2) as an assignment, and (3) as a function. For purposes of this directory, bishop in charge refers to an ordained bishop serving by assignment as bishop of a congregation where he is not the senior pastor. This directory does not include cases where the bishop is the senior pastor.
